Ionic React Vs React Native- Which One To Choose?

Ionic React vs React Native

As you all know, Ionic and React Native are the most popular frameworks for mobile apps development. Ionic react is an open-source UI and Native API project that includes cross-platforms for using native functionality that eases the app development for iOS, Android and web as progressive web apps. React native was released in 2015 and builds apps using Javascript only. Both frameworks are used to build cross-platform apps but they differ from each other in numerous ways. Here we will see a major difference between Ionic React vs React Native for mobile app development. Before we start the comparison, let’s see the details of each framework.

What Is Ionic React?

Ionic react is an open source Ui and Native API project that consists of cross-platform UI components and native functionality for building iOS, Android, Electron and Progressive web apps using React and standard web technology. It is an official React version of Ionic framework and used by a wide community of developers and companies like Amtrak, AAA, Burger King, Home Depot and so on.

Ionic react combines the central Ionic experience with APIs that are tailored to React Developers. It allows you to import core ionic components directly into your React project. Ionic React acts as a thin wrapper around the components exporting them as Native React components.

The earlier Ionic supports Cordova, the native React version of Ionic Framework that runs on all new cross-platform engines called Capacitor. This capacitor engine offers consistent, web focused set of APIs that helps apps to focus on web-standards.

Features of Ionic React-

1. Multiple Platforms Support-

Ionic react uses a project created at ionic named Capacitor that allows you to call native code directly from JavaScript, and uncover new native functionality or displaying Native UI is simple. This native runtime can be deployed to native iOS, Android, Electron and the web as progressive web app.

2. Compatibility With React DOM-

Ionic react uses React DOM which is a popular rendering libraries for React. It has more usage and hence has better compatibility with React ecosystem that allows it to work with the React library.

3. Build Fast & Beautiful Mobile Applications-

Ionic react is an open-source software development kit that allows you to build millions of customized apps to fit with any brand.

4. Native Functionality-

Ionic provides native functionality that includes secure authentication and identity management by using advanced encryption APIs available on iOS and Android, high performance offline encrypted data storage and a library of supported and maintained native functionality.

What Is React Native?

Released in 2015 by Facebook, react native is a popular cross platform solution to build world-class app experiences on native platforms. React native merges the best parts of native development with JavaScript libraries to build user interfaces. It allows you to create truly native apps with great users’ experience. It allows developers to develop apps rapidly by reloading apps rather than recompiling. Development with React native is simple, quick and efficient because it is UI focussed. It uses JSX(JavaScript extension) that is like HTML. It does not support CSS, you can only find similar styling that is close to CSS written within components and not in a separate single file.

Know the most common mistakes to avoid while developing react native app at- 6 Mistakes to Avoid When Creating a React Native App.

Features of React Native-

1. Programming Language-

React native is written in JavaScript language that uses the popular framework React. The UI parts are written in JSX, rather than HTML. JSX is like any other template language but it has the features and powers of JavaScript.

2. Development Time-

It is less tedious and hence numerous organizations and even developers today prefer using React Native alongside NodeJS for making unique mobile applications.

3. Better Performance-

Applications that use React Native are GPU oriented which smoothens the app performance. It requires very less resources to build a mobile app with React Native. Developers who are proficient to write React code will be able to target the web, iOS and Android.

Ionic React vs React Native-

1. Web vs Native-

Ionic react is web-first. This means that it implements native iOS and Android UI patterns by using cross-platform, standards-based web technology rather than accessing platform UI controls directly. Whereas, react native provides abstraction through React which controls platform UI controls. React Native uses mostly standard iOS and Android controls, in some of the cases performance may be higher. Interfacing with existing native app’s UI controls is easier. But native controls are harder to customize as compared to others hence developers may find react native apps more complex to design custom UI experiences.

Ionic react is the most similar to traditional React web app development as Ionic react apps are React web apps. It offer a web developer a fast and familiar development experience directly in Chrome or their browser of choice. Ionic react can also easily be added to any existing  web based react app.

React native does not use traditional web development tools directly but has some custom support for integrating with chrome debugger. As Ionic React is based on web technology and the entire web platform, it doesn’t need to bet on a new platform. Chances are your team is already put resources into the web platform. React Native, is a self-contained platform and ecosystem and must be self-sufficient to succeed in long term.

2. Cross-platform Support-

React Native is a UI library having support for iOS and Android app store only. Whereas Ionic React supports iOS, Android, Electron, and the web using Progressive Web App technology.

React native has a “learn once, write anywhere” approach and Ionic has a “write once, run anywhere” approach. With React native, developers learn set of concepts and then build UI screens for iOS and Android. Ionic React apps run the same UI on all platforms using responsive web design, CSS and platform detection to allow developers to customize an app for specific platforms if they choose.

Also, Ionic React use Adaptive Styling to map core UI concepts like navigation, tabs, toolbars and buttons to platform expectations like material design. React Native requires developers to build screens especially for each platform

3. Native Access And Functionality-

Top 11 Angular Best Practices To Follow In 2020

Top 11 Angular Best Practices To Follow In 2020

Top 11 angular best practices to follow in 2020

Today, more than 40% of front-end developers use Angular. It is a prominent JavaScript framework for developing dynamic mobile and desktop web applications. Angular is developed and maintained by Google itself. It has gained immediate popularity and support as now static HTML pages could be more interactive. Here we have listed some of the new angular practices that will help you to write clean code, maintain coding standard and performance.

Top 11 Angular Best Practices

Angular Best Practices

1. Use Angular CLI-

It is a powerful accessibility tool available for developing apps with angular. Angular CLI eases the app development and follows all best practices. Angular CLI is a command-line interface tool which is used to initialize, develop, scaffold, maintain and test-debug angular apps. Use Angular CLI to generate new components, directives, modules, services and pipes rather than manually creating files and folders.

# Install Angular CLI
npm install -g @angular/cli
# Check Angular CLI version
ng version

2. Angular Coding Styles-

For angular web development, you should follow the standard coding format and your project must have a clean coding style which will in general be basic, understandable and adaptable by your programmer in future. Here are some rules that you should follow-

  • Limit files to 400 lines of code
  • Per function, the code must not exceed from 75 lines
  • Use custom prefix to share feature area for all slider components
  • Have consistent names for all symbols. The suggested pattern is feature.type.ts
  • If the values of the variables are intact, then declare it with ‘const’.
  • If you often prefix names for field, table, and database, then you need to avoid this for Interface names like iShape, AbastractShape, etc.
  • Use dash to separate words in descriptive name and use dots to separate descriptive name from the type
  • Names of properties and methods should be in lower camel case
  • Leave one empty line between imports and modules like third party and application imports, third party modules and custom modules.

3. Follow Proper Folder Structure-

Creating a folder structure is an important factor to consider before project initialization. A messy folder welcomes many problems which continue frequenting you all through your development process. Regardless of whether it is a medium and large-sized project,  you will go over a lot of changes being developed and your project should easily adapt the new changes made in the middle of development. And, that is possible when you have made an appropriate folder in place.

-- app
|-- modules
|-- home
|-- [+] components
|-- [+] pages
|-- home-routing.module.ts
|-- home.module.ts
|-- core
|-- [+] authentication
|-- [+] footer
|-- [+] guards
|-- [+] http
|-- [+] interceptors
|-- [+] mocks
|-- [+] services
|-- [+] header
|-- core.module.ts
|-- ensureModuleLoadedOnceGuard.ts
|-- logger.service.ts
|
|-- shared
|-- [+] components
|-- [+] directives
|-- [+] pipes
|-- [+] models
|
|-- [+] configs
|-- assets
|-- scss
|-- [+] partials
|-- _base.scss
|-- styles.scss

4. Use Index.ts-

Index.ts is helpful to keep related things together with the goal that we don’t need to be bothered about the source file name. It helps to reduce the size of import statement. Let us see an example-

We need /heroes/index.ts as-

//heroes/index.ts
export * from './hero.model';
export * from './hero.service';
export { HeroComponent } from './hero.component';

You can import all things by using source folder name.

import { Hero, HeroService } from '../heroes'; // index is implied

5. Lazy Loading Feature Module-

Using lazy load the modules can improve your productivity. It is a built-in feature in Angular that helps developers to load the required things. For instance- When you use the feature, it loads the components and other things that you need and stops unnecessary files to get loaded.

Here’s how it functions;

// app.routing.ts
{ path: 'not-lazy-loaded', component: NotLazyLoadedComponent }

Here the ‘LazyLoading’ isn’t set up and you will wind up making large and superfluously heavy-sized applications.

When you use ‘LazyLoad’ and it reduces the size of the application by abstaining from unnecessary file from loading.

6. Use ES6 Features-

ECMAScript is updated with new features and functionalities. Use ES6 that  has a lot of new features and functionalities which could be used in Angular.

New features of ES6-

  • Arrow Functions
  • String interpolation
  • Object Literals
  • Let and Const
  • Destructuring
  • Default

Using ‘let and const’ instead of ‘var’-

Using ‘let and const‘ instead of ‘var’ prevents the issues and problems which you have due to var. ‘let’can be used in a normal situation and the value does not receive any changes, then ‘const’ should be in place. Here’s the example;

let temp;
Const pi = 3.14159

7. State Management-

It manages the state transitions by storing the states of any form of data. NGRX, NGXS, Akita, are some of the state management libraries with different usages, states and purposes. NGXS could be the preferred and easy to learn for developers.

8. Avoid Logic In Templates-

All template logic will be extracted into a component which helps to cover that in a unit test and reduce bugs when there is template change.

Logic in templates

// template
Status: Unavailable// component
ngOnInit (): void {
this.status = apiRes.status;
}

Logic in component

// template
Status: Unavailable// component
ngOnInit (): void {
this.status = apiRes.status;
this.isUnavailable = this.status === 'inActive' || 'hold';
}

9. Use async pipe In Templates-

Rather than using plain JS values, observables can be directly used in templates with async pipe. An observable would be unwrapped into plain value. When a component using the template is destroyed, observable is automatically unsubscribed.

Without Using async pipe

//template
{{ text }}

Using async pipe

// template
{{ text | async }}
// component
this.text = observable.pipe(
map(value => value.item)
);

10. Use trackBy With ngFor-

When you are going to use ngFor to loop over an array, use it with a trackBy function that returns a unique identifier for each DOM item. When the array changes, angular re-renders the whole DOM tree. But when you use trackBy, angular will know which element has changed and will only make DOM changes only for that element.

Use ngFor

<li *ngFor="let item of itemList;">{{item.id}}</li>

Now whenever changes occur, the whole DOM tree will be re-rendered.

Using trackBy function

<ul>
  <li *ngFor="let item of itemList; trackBy: trackByFn">
    {{item.id}}
  </li>
</ul>
Load items(button)
export class MyApp {
getItems() { // load more items }
trackByFn(index, item) {
return index; // or item.id
}
}

Now, it returns as a unique identifier for each item, hence just updated items will be re-rendered.

11. Declare Variable Type Instead Of Using ‘any’-

Generally when developers work on Angular projects, they use ‘any’ to declare variables. If you are not specifying the variables and constants, they will be assumed by the value and thus, will be assigned to it. If it occurs, you are now in a problem as it will create some unintended issues, anytime.

For instance;

If you code like this;

const x = 1;
const y = 'a';
const z = x + y;
console.log(`Value of z is: ${z}`

// Output
Value of z is 1a

You are supposed to perfect output.

And, if you code like this;

const x: number = 1;
const y: number = 'a';
const z: number = x + y;

// This will give a compile error saying:

Type ‘”a”‘ is not assignable to type ‘number’.

const y: number

You may not get all you needed. To put it plainly, you can prevent this by typing the number instead of typing ‘any’.

Amazing New Features And Updates Of Angular 10

Recently, on 24th of June 2020, Angular version 10 has been released with the beta version. This a major release and is mainly focused on the ecosystem and quality tools instead of introducing new features. Angular 10 features new date range picker in the Angular material UI component library and warnings for CommonJS imports.

If we take a glance at previous version updates, Angular 9.0 came in use on February 6, accompanied on March 25 by Angular 9.1. On May 28, 2019, Angular 8.0 was released. Here we will see the new features of Angular 10. Before we dig into the new features, let us see how to update your version to Angular 10?

How To Update To Version 10?

Use the following command to upgrade the version to angular 10.

ng update @angular/cli @angular/core

New Features Of Angular 10-

1. Performance-

App Performance is a significant factor for app success and this is what Angular is Known for. With the new Angular 10, we can observe a great improvement in performance as the Type-Checking performance boost is done to the compiler-cli and computation basepath is shifted to lazy-load which allows it to work when needed in TargetedEntryPointFinder.

In previous versions of Angular, basePaths was computed whenever the finder was instantiated, and the resources get wasted when the TargetedEntryPoint had already been pasted.

2. Typescript 3.9, TSLib 2.9 & TSLint v6-

Apart from past versions which supported typescript 3.6, 3.7 and even 3.8, Angular 10 supports typescript 3.9. Typescript is a language built on JavaScript by adding syntax for type declarations and annotations used by the TypeScript compiler to type-check your code.

This in turn clean readable JavaScript that runs on lots of different runtimes. Typescript helps to save the files with high editing functionality across editors. With TypeScript new version 3.9, the team has worked on performance, polish and stability.

Apart from error checking, this version powers things like completions, quick fixes and accelerating the compiler and editing experience.

Some exciting features of Typescript 3.9-

  • “>” and “}” are considered as invalid JSX text characters with typescript new version.
  • Typecript’s latest version provides a quick fix solution to include missing return statements in situations where you might forget to return the value from a function at the end of that function.
  • With angular version10 Typescript automatically detects the types of imports that are used to keep any type of files style clean. Any downleveling to support ES5 in this version will be done at the end of the build process.
  • Compilations with ‘Promise.all’ and ‘Promise.race’ functions have been attacked and the 3.7 version has now been fixed.
  • TSlib, the runtime library for TypeScript consists of helper functions, and now updated to TSlib 2.0. Also there is an update on the TSLint static analysis tool for TypeScript to version 6.
  • // @ts-expect-error comments before a code line as a prefix, with a goal that the TypeScript will not report the error. Typescript will show ‘Unused ‘@ts-expect-error‘ directive if there isn’t any error.
  • Angular 10 has deprecated the inclusion of ESM5 or FESM5 bundles that save 119MB of download and install time at the time of running yarn or npm install for Angular packages and libraries.

3. Localization-

It is one of the best feature of Angular 10. The latest version supports merging of multiple translation documents that can only load one file with the old versions. But with the new version, customers can specify a couple of documents in keeping with locale and translations from each of these documents can be merged together by message ID. Means you have to put the documents so as of most essential first with fallback translations later.

4. Browser Compatibility-

Blockchain Vs Database- Which One To Choose For Startups?

You might be using a traditional database for many years and have hands on it. But these days blockchain technology is gaining popularity because of the security it provides. If you are running a startup and confused about choosing the best between blockchain and traditional database, then you are not alone as there is a clear confusion when it comes to comparing these both technologies. For beginners, both might sound similar. But, it is not true  when many people consider blockchain as just another database.

In fact, blockchain is more than just a database. Here we will compare blockchain vs database. Before proceeding for comparison, let’s see each one in detail.

What Is Blockchain?

Blockchain is better defined as a distributed ledger technology(DLT). It enables a set of peers to work together to create a unified and decentralized network. It uses consensus algorithm through which peers can communicate and also share information or data. There is no need for a central authority and this makes the whole network trustworthy as compared to other networks.

Also, there is no need for a centralized authority which makes the whole network trustworthy when compared to other networks. The terminologies used are proof of work and time-stamping. The system is secure, transparent and immutable. When one peer send information to another, transaction is generated. After generation of transactions, it needs to be validated using consensus algorithms. Here proof of work is used to validate the work, which ensures that only valid transactions are passed into the blockchain. Blockchain is all about the blocks and are used to store transactions and data which is required to operate blockchain successfully.

What Is Database?

Database is a centralized data structure having the ability to read, write, and run by an administrator. It can store multiple copies of same data and its history. Users having appropriate access can execute read and write actions. Centralization is the main property of databases due to which centralization is easy and fast access. It brings many benefits to the database. Storing and accessing data is easy and rapid. But there are some drawbacks and the significant one is the chance of data getting corrupted.

The admin has all rights. Data structure is used by database to store the information. The stored data can be queried using Structured Query Language (SQL). Data elements are stored in the form of tables. Relational database allow to work with multiple databases simultaneously.

You can also know details of blockchain at- Blockchain – The Basics you should know

Blockchain Vs Database-

Blockchain vs Database

1. Architecture-

Blockchain uses distributed ledger architecture. It is a peer-to-peer enabled network in which each peer connects with another using secure cryptographic protocols. As there are no centralized node, they take part in a consensus algorithm. The various available algorithms are proof of stake, proof of work, proof of provenance and so on. Proof of work is the popular algorithm required to solve complex mathematical equations to validate transactions over the network.

Database is based on client/server architecture that can work in small scale and large scale environments. The server is a centralized processing unit and the client receives information from it. Client server communication is maintained through a secure connection. As database is based on centralized approach, it doesn’t need a consensus as a blockchain. Administrators can control all the aspects of the database and all activities are carried out according to the given permissions.

2. Authority-

Blockchain works in a decentralized manner and it brings many implementation and process changes. Networks are allowed to work independently, without need of any centralized control. Decentralizations bring a lot of implementation changes to the current systems and processes that are used by industries. It allows networks to independently work and remove the need for centralized control.

Whereas database works on centralized approach. The administrator has all the authority to manage, create, modify, delete and control the records in the database. Without an administrator, the database will not function at all. He is at the top of hierarchy and can perform tasks like performance optimization. Also he can change the performance optimization of system and delegate authority to others according to their roles in system management.

3. Data handling And Immutability-

Both blockchain and database work differently for data storage and handling.

Blockchain supports immutability means the data that is written cannot be erased or replaced. Immutability means no data altering is possible within the network.

Blockchain supports two operations, Read and write-

Write Operations- write operation is used to add data and information to the blockchain network

Read Operation- read operation is used to read or retrieve data from the blockchain network

In a traditional database, data can be stored and retrieved easily. CRUD is used to carry out proper operation of the application where CRUD stands for Create, read, Update and Delete. This means that data can be replaced ad erased with new values. Traditional databases don’t exhibit immutability and thus are more inclined to being controlled by a rogue administrator.

4. Speed And Performance-

When a transaction is carried out in a blockchain, it is similar to a database. But is slower due to signature verification, consensus mechanism and redundancy. Signature verification is carried out using cryptographic algorithms. And this is a complex process, hence requires time to process. The blockchain is decentralized and it relies on the consensus mechanism. It requires more time before a transaction can be processed.

Databases are known for blockchain and can handle millions of data at the same time. As it works on a centralized approach, it doesn’t need to go through a signature verification process that makes it faster. Each transaction is automatically verified by the database and can be executed rapidly using a queue.

5. Cost And Resources-

Blockchain is a new technology as compared to traditional database and is still progressing hence businesses requires proper planning and execution to integrate it. As blockchain requires end-to-end implementation and cannot be easily integrated into an existing system as an add-on. Blockchain might provide a cost-effective solution because peers manage the network. Organizations don’t require extra cost.

Traditional database is less costly when compared to the blockchain. It is easy to set up and scale and can work with most of the existing processes. Hence most of the businesses who want a rapid and cost-effective system opt for traditional databases. Businesses do not need to manage extra cost for network handling and hence it saves cost.

When To Choose Blockchain?

  • Monetary transactions
  • Transfer of value
  • Verification of trusted data (identity, reputation, credibility, integrity, etc.)
  • Public Key Verification
  • Decentralized applications (DApps)
  • Voting systems

When To Choose A Database?

  • Data that need continuous updating, like monitoring and sensors
  • Confidential information (non-transparent to the public)
  • Data that does not require verification
  • Fast Online transaction processing
  • Financial data from markets that require fast processing
  • Standalone applications that store data

Which One To Choose?

Here you’ve seen the comparison of Blockchain vs Database with different parameters. Blockchain has an advantage of verification methods but it slows the verification process. Means you have to avoid blockchain where fast execution is necessary. It is beneficial for trust, transparency and verification.

You can prefer databases where critical business processes need to be supported and scaled at the same time. Databases are a better choice for general purpose applications. It is high in performance and scalability.
