How To Optimize Performance Of React App?

Since the inception of React, it has transformed a way to build web applications. By using virtual DOM, React can make UI updates more efficiently. Mostly this makes web apps more irritable. Developers complain that medium sized react web apps perform so poorly and slowly. So here we came with some tips to optimize performance of react apps. Let’s have a look at those tips.

Tips To Optimize Performance Of React Apps-

React logo

1. Multiple Chunk Files-

Your app starts with a few components. You start adding new dependencies and features and before you know it, you end up with a big production file. Consider having separate two files by separating your vendor or third-party library code from app code by leveraging CommonChunkPlugin for webpack. You’ll end up with vendor.bundle.js and app.bundle.js. By dividing your files, browser caches less frequently and parallel downloads resources to minimize the load time wait. If you’re using latest version of webpack, consider SplitChunksPlugin.

2. Using Production Mode Flag In Webpack-

If you have used webpack 4 as a module bundler for your app, set the mode option to production. Basically it tells webpack to use the built-in optimization:

   module.exports = {
      mode: 'production'
    };

Alternatively, you can pass it as a CLI argument:

webpack –mode=production

This will limit optimizations, like minification or removing development-only code to libraries. It won’t expose source code, file paths and so on.

3. Function/Stateless Components and React.PureComponent-

In react development, function components and PureComponent provides two different ways of optimizing react apps at component level. Function components prevent constructing instances of class while minimizing the overall bundle size as it minifies better than classes. Conversely, so as to optimize UI updates, you can convert function components to PureComponent class. If component doesn’t use state and other life cycle methods, the initial render time is somehow more complex when compared to function components with faster updates.

When to use React.PureComponent?

React.PureComponent does a shallow comparison on state change. Meaning that it compares values when looking at primitive data types and compares references for objects. Because of this, you must ensure two criterias fulfil when using React.PureComponent:

  • Props/State should not have multi-level nested object.

Tip- All child component of React.PureComponent should be a Pure or functional component.

  • Component State/Props is an immutable object;

4. Use React.Fragments to Avoid Additional HTML Element Wrappers-

React.fragments allows you to group a list of children without adding an extra node.

class Comments extends React.PureComponent{
    render() {
        return (
            <React.Fragment>
                <h1>Comment Title</h1>
                <p>comments</p>
                <p>comment time</p>
            </React.Fragment>
        );
    }
}

There is alternate and more concise syntax using React.fragments:

class Comments extends React.PureComponent{
    render() {
        return (
            <>
                <h1>Comment Title</h1>
                <p>comments</p>
                <p>comment time</p>
            </>
        );
    }
}

How To Convert Native iOS And Android Apps To React Native?

How To Convert Native iOS And Android Apps To React Native?

How To Convert Native iOS And Android Apps To React Native

In 2015, react native was released as an open-source platform. It doesn’t need HTML or CSS. Rather, the react native developers write native code in Java or Objective C. The ease of complexity and scalability that the framework holds is matchless and the app provides improved user experience. But some software development companies still think that the native apps are best for app development. In most of the situations, businessmen are convinced with respect to the technology stack that these organizations support, thinking about their experience. But, they wind up saving more if the prerequisite of the Android and iOS application isn’t at par with the development. Then, which is the way to go?

Here are two ways to develop a highly reliable android and iOS app-

  • Build native app using React native
  • Convert existing app to React native

In case you are putting resources into the development of a Native application, you need not spare one more big budget. Here we’ll guide you about how to convert Native android or ios apps to react native. Before digging into it, let’s see the things to consider while converting native android and ios apps into React Native.

Things To Consider While Converting Native Android And iOS Apps Into React Native-

Reducing the number of code to be written is the most efficient way to convert native Android and iOS app into React Native.If there are lots of changes to be made in the extent native Android and iOS app, it will be better idea to develop a new app using React native. But it limits the requirements and the type of the application. Hence, if you are looking to replace Native Android and iOS application into React Native, below are some of the aspects that you should consider:

1. Update Libraries To Latest Versions-

When you develop an app using react native, it is always advisable to switch to the new and advanced technology stacks. Here the tech stack includes frameworks, tools, libraries and databases. If you’re using other version, it is advisable to check for the android version. Lots of features are available to use when you choose latest version of React native, that includes auto-linking, Android migration, lean core, accessibility and so on. If you find any third party app interrupting with the app with build.gradle, you can include post-install script such as-

    // package.json
    {
        "scripts": {
            "bootstrap": "yarn install && yarn run post-install"
            "post-install": "./scripts/postInstall.sh",
        }
    }

Also, it is recommended to include Hermes to enhance the speed of your app.

    project.ext.react = [
        entryFile: "index.android.js",
        enableHermes: true, // clean and rebuild if changing
    ]

2. Execute Custom Native Modules-

Just making a module file isn’t sufficient. You need to register a module before using a native module. And you need to build another Java class for the creation and registration of this module. After a successful import of file, last step to complete the registration process is to initiate DevicePackage class. To achieve this, you need to edit file by adding the below code-

new DevicePackage() //Add your package here

In the JavaScript file, you can use the module methods through,

NativeModules.<moduleName>. <methodName>

3. Adding Assets To The React Native App-

There are various assets in an application- launcher icons, push notification icons and custom fonts. These components are to improve the user satisfaction rate. And also it is important to make the react native app as user-friendly as possible. IN this way, you can change the appearance of icon of debug app. Also, push notification is important feature of an app when it comes to bringing a user back to the application. Image that you select for push notification logo should have a transparent background for a better view. Apart from this, images, icons and font also play an important role in the great view of the app. Therefore, you can develop functionality for fetching the necessary font from the rich font family.

    val fontTypefaces = HashMap<String, Typeface>()
    fun downloadFonts(fontName: String, font: GoogleFonts) {
        val handlerThread = HandlerThread("fonts")
        handlerThread.start()
        val handler = Handler(handlerThread.looper)
        val builder = QueryBuilder(font.family)
        if(font.italic == 1) {
            builder.italic()
        }
        if(font.weight > 0) {
            builder.weight(font.weight)
        }
        val request = FontRequest(
            "com.google.android.gms.fonts",
            "com.google.android.gms",
            builder.build(),
            R.array.com_google_android_gms_fonts_certs)
        val callback = object : FontsContractCompat.FontRequestCallback() {
            override fun onTypefaceRetrieved(typeface: Typeface) {
            ReactFontManager.getInstance().setTypeface(fontName, typeface.style, typeface)
            fontTypefaces[fontName] = typeface
        }
        override fun onTypefaceRequestFailed(reason: Int) {
        }

        FontsContractCompat
            .requestFont(context, request, callback, handler)
    }

Also, you can load the fonts by using ReactFontManager. You just need to call the font using React Native is a same way as below-

    const styles = {
        proximanovaText: {
            fontFamily: 'Proxima Nova',
        },
    };

4. UI Components-

Best feature of using React native is that programmers can reuse components to fit and develop application.react native uses pixel density to ensure the layout resolution is at standard with Android. This results in, you don’t need to consider the issues associated with the style misalignment between two platforms. Android and iOS have differences with regards to interfaces as well as design standards. Subsequently, you need to follow material design rules to look through the default components.

How To Add React Native To Your Existing Native Android And iOS App?

Best way to approach a React Native app is to start from scratch. Also you can use it when you want to integrate a user flow to the extent native apps. You can simply integrate react native to your existing apps when you know the appropriate components and steps.

Important steps to know before integration-

  • Plan dependencies related to the React Native and work on the directory structure
  • Build react native components in Javascript
  • Install RCTRootView to iOS app and ReactRootView to Android App, that will work as a container for react native
  • Start with the react native server and execute the application.
  • Validate that your React Native components are functioning as expected.

Requirements For Integration-

1. Prepare A Directory Structure In Place-

To provide a seamless user experience, you can have a new folder for react native projects. After this, you can copy existing code to ios or android folder.

2. Set Up Javascript Dependencies-

Go to the root directory. Check installation of the yarn package manager. Here you will be building a new package with-

	{
	  "name": "ReactNativeApp",
	  "version": "0.60",
	  "private": true,
	  "scripts": {
		"start": "yarn react-native start"
	  }
	}

Install react native packages and navigate to new packages. Yarn will create a new folder, which will have all the dependencies about Javascript for building a project.

How To Integrate React Native?

1. Maven Configuration-

First step of configuring maven in to add react native and Javascript dependencies to library build.gradle file. When you want to ensure that you are on the appropriate react native version, you can replace plus sign with actual version of it. Check that you add an entry for the Javascript maven directories and react native to ‘allprojects’. You can also cross-check for the final path.

2. Enable Autolinking Of Native Modules –

For autolinking, You need to make an entry to settings.gradle. Then, add that entry to app/build.gradle.

3. Configuration Of Permissions-

Check your internet permission. You can take a look in Android.Manifest.xml. If according to the user flow, you need access to DevSettingActivity, you can add activity to AndroidManifest.xml.

4. ClearText Traffic-

If your android version is over 9, you’ll notice that cleartext traffic is disabled. It will prevent the app from connecting to Metro builder. To allow the allow the connection, you can apply code userCleartextTraffic to AndroidManifest.xml.

5. Integration Of Code-

Integrating code needs programmers to follow particular steps-

  • Build an index.js file.
  • Include React Native code
  • Get permission for development error overlay
  • RenderRender JS component

By default, the dev menu will be activated but not in emulators. Subsequently, you need to use ctrl + M to execute JavaScript code for testing.

How To Optimize React Native App Performance In 2021?

How To Optimize React Native App Performance In 2021?

How To Optimize React Native App Performance In 2021

Any app or product must have good performance to stand out in market competition. When you work with React native, you may face problems with the performance of your app. So you need to pay attention to performance improvements and best practices for react native app during its development, fix some issues and deliver a great experience to end users. Hence here we’ll discuss some of the tips and best practices to optimize react native app performance. But if you are confused to choose react native for mobile app development, have a look at- Why Use React Native For Mobile App Development?

Tips To Optimize React Native App Performance-

1. Resize And Scale Images-

Optimizing images is important to improve react native app’s performance if the app is built to show a large amount of graphical content or images.  If images are not properly optimized in terms of resolution and size, rendering of multiple images need high memory usage on the device. It may cause app crash because of memory overload. Here are some of the improvements to optimize images in react native app-

  • Use of smaller resolution images
  • Use PNG format rather than JPG format
  • Using WEBP format for images – it reduces the binary size of image on iOS and android

2. Do Cache All Images Locally-

Catching is a way solve image problems that optimizes overall performance of react native app. But while caching images at the time of loading in your app, you have to save images locally. By caching images locally in the subsequent requests, you won’t just improve the app’s performance but also save a time of loading images. Now, it is time to recall the debate on cross-platform vs native app development for android and ios as here caching with the image component is for ios only not for android.

Let’s see a way to do local image caching:

<Image
  source={{
    uri: ‘https://unsplash.it/200/200?image=8’
    cache: ‘only-if-cached’
  }}
  style={{ … }}
/>

Though react native is particular about image components, it lacks some important solutions to reduce the impact of following issues-

  • Reduced image loading speed
  • Attaching multiple images on single screen
  • Low app performance
  • Poor cache performance
  • Image flickering and cache misses

You should consider quick loading image format with react native libraries with great cross platform app development frameworks.

React native is different from React because the former promotes mobile apps, and the latter is targeted towards websites. These days, react developers can efficiently work on mobile apps development with assistance of react native. The framework embeds a fully native interface with the capability of code sharing between platforms. It improves the development process and eases developers’ work to reuse the code and develop apps for both Android and iOS platforms.

Similar to React, React native codes in XML markup and Javascript language. Once the code is ready, react native bridge calls necessary APIs in Java/Objective C to deploy apps on Android/iOS respectively. In this way, transfuses the web-based app to display mobile-friendly interface rather than webviews. Because of React Native component libraries and development tools all this is possible with ease and integration.

What Is NativeScript?

It is an open-source framework used to build cross-platform apps for android and ios using Javascript. It transpiles one programming language to another while building native apps using Vuejs, Angular and TypeScript. Nativescript has a rendering engine which provides native performance and user experience. You can develop simple gaming apps, real time apps, geolocation apps, music or video streaming apps with Nativescript.

What Is React Native?

React native is a popular open-source framework that runs on Javascript. Mainly it focussed on native rendering of apps that is highly compatible with ios and android. React Native is written with the combination of XML- Esque markup and Javascript which is also known as JSX. It is supported by facebook community.

With react native you can build simple cross-platform apps, quick prototype apps, apps with simplified UI, apps with reusable components and so on.

Nativescript Vs React Native- A Comparison

1. App Architecture-

NativeScript –

It follows the MVVM or MVC architectural pattern. Whereas, this framework widely functions on Modules, CLI and Plugins. It’s structure composed of multiple modules and each of them enables a set of specific features. Page module and root module are the two important modules that make up the architecture. Togetherly, they form an app module including CSS style, business logic and XML-based UI codes. Nativescript has an ability to efficiently manage module dialogs because of its MVC friendliness.

React Native-

React native possesses a bridge between Native thread and Javascript thread. According to this functionality, Javascript code interfaces with the platform and the Native API. In case of iOS, React native makes use of Javascript separately to run all codes, whereas it bundles the JavascriptCore within the android app. While this may increase the native functionality, it also increases the application size, resulting in performance issues or device lag.

2. User Experience-

Nativescript-

You can build enterprise level business apps with nativescript and it is one of the best benefit of choosing this framework. Also, you could customize the free, professional-grade UI elements that Nativescript offers. It’s all features are supported by native functionality and native controls so it gives you performance that improves user experience. Nativescript tests its libraries, templates and UI elements before implementation to achieve the desired user-interface. With the use of getFrameByld, classes such as Frame and properties like navigationContext you can improve user experience to the next level.

React Native-

Style Design in iOS and Android’s  Material design are transforming by the day and it becomes challenging for React native to keep up with the constant change in the requirements of native platforms. Also, ready-made React Native UI kits like React Virgin, Shoutem and And Design makes it challenging to create consistent designs across platforms. Some important components like ScrollView fixed header, Activity indicators, Modal components, Snap carousals and pagination components help to improve UX across multi-platform.

3. App Size-

NativeScript-

Simple Native app built with NativeScript can be more than 12MB. But it is still small-sized considering the package of native elements and features. Self-containing multiple APKs within one package with single codebase targets various device configurations and reduces size of app. ABI mechanism of Nativescript with android allows device to automatically extract machine code and scan for shared library during development. It saves app size because device identifies the 32 bit and 64 bit compatibility.

React Native-

The size of hello world app built with react native is 7MB and when native dependencies were added, the size increases up to 13.4 MB. React native can iterate apps faster and at minimal size better than NativeScript. Also, allowing Proguard and using enableSeperateBuildPerCPUArchitecture element will reduce the sie by auto-generating split builds for native and external libraries.
