NFC(Near Field Communication)


What is NFC?

NFC is an abbreviation of Near Field Communication. Nowadays this feature integrated in many portable devices for the wireless communication between devices such as smartphones or tablets. It is a set of communication protocols which allows two electronic devices, one of which is commonly a portable device such as a smartphone, to establish communication. As the name implies, it allows a short range communication between compatible devices. Near Field Communication standards are defined by a group called the NFC Forum, which incorporates Nokia, Sony and Philips. Basically, if your phone has NFC as a feature it tends to be used to transfer data to other phones or to NFC readers. Compatibility is the way to the development of NFC as a popular payment and data communication method.

How does Near Field Communication works?

The technology used in NFC is based on older RFID (Radio-frequency identification) ideas, which uses electromagnetic induction so as to transmit information. Near Field Communication is another standard for wireless data transmission. Data transmission frequency of NFC is 13.56MHz, you can send data at either 106, 212, or 424 kilo bits per second. This frequency is quite sufficient for a range to transfer data such as contact details, pictures and music.
NFC Technology has three forms: Type A, Type B, and FeliCa. All are identical but interact in slightly different ways. FeliCa is usually used in Japan. Devices using NFC may be active or passive. NFC tag is a passive device which contains information that other devices can read but it does not read any information itself. Active devices can read information and also send it. Smartphone is an active device. It not only be able to collect information from NFC tags, but it would also be able to exchange information with other compatible phones or devices. It could even modify the data on the NFC tag whenever approved to roll out such improvements.

The most common use in smartphones is the peer-to-peer mode. This allows two NFC- enabled devices to exchange information between each other. In this mode both devices switch between active when sending data and passive when receiving. Read/write mode, is a one-way data transmission. The active device, possibly your smartphone, interfaces with another device in order to read information from it. The last method of operation is card simulation. The NFC device can function as a contactless credit card and make payments or tap into public transport systems.

What makes the Near Field Communication different from Bluetooth?

You might think that NFC is not necessary, considering that Bluetooth has been more broadly accessible for many years. The  real conflict for NFC is that it requires less power utilization than Bluetooth. But NFC has one major advantage and which is its fast connectivity. Due to the use of inductive coupling, and the absence of manual pairing, it takes less than one tenth of a second to establish a connection between two devices.

NFC payments are secure, even more secure than EMV or chip card payments. By combining credit cards, subway tickets, and paper coupons all into one device, a customer can board a train, pay for groceries, reclaim for coupons or store loyalty points, and even exchange contact information all with  just the wave of a smartphone. To keep the eye on records of patients, their previous treatments and their prescribed medications, hospitals are using Near Field communication technology into their medical technology systems. Nurses can track how much time the patient was in a hospital for treatment and which medicines or treatments they carried out simply by swiping the phone over an NFC reader. It is designed to record that information and transfer it into the system. This could be possible just by using a smartphone or other device having NFC.

Travel-

The problem facing at the time of flying could be reduced by NFC technology. When a cancellation of tickets or flight has occurred or a passenger has urgency to make last minute changes in his schedule,the customer can take care of choosing new tickets by scanning his phone at a payment desk. Passengers can also label their luggage with NFC tags for easy recognizable proof and recovery.

Any stuff having a sign of sale could contain a tag holding all the information about the properties along with pictures of the inside and a link to the realtor’s website. An ad also has a link to a website of product or a special coupon for buying the product at a discounted price. This discount can be recognized by the NFC reader.

At museums, parks, historical buildings, places of sightseeing are set up with an NFC Tags embedded in it, which is used by the visitors by scanning and both see and hear the significant information about what they are looking.
